Today I’m going to share with you some very personal stories and productivity tips.
You’ll gain Three very important lessons.
I promise this may be the best 5-7 minutes you spend today.
Over the past 5 – 7 years I’ve endured more Ups and Downs then Six Flags Amusement Park does on a busy Saturday during June.
After a recent personal challenge that had me depressed and feeling worse then I’d thought possible I even began to question “Past Lives” and Karma.
I mean come on….enough is enough!!!
Then, the other night, while laying in a hotel room I watched Real Sports with Bryant Gumble.
It profiled a team of Injured Vets from our recent wars who participated in softball games against able bodied teams.
You can see a little of the “Wounded Warriors” right here:
Talk about a wake up call and a reminder of why I’m so truly grateful for what I have.
Before watching this I was in a depression and didn’t realize it.
I’d not moved from couch much more then needed for over a week during my spare time.
I’ll share some specifics in another post as to what I was going through.
However, after watching this It radically changed my paradigm and thinking in a split second.
Someone I know from this “Virtual Web 2.0 World” that I’ve connected with on a personal and business level is Spike Humer. (This is the guy who’s worked side by side with Jay Abraham for years now. To see some Jay awesomeness, come back and see this post here)
Talk about Character and Class.
This is a “Stand Up Guy”.
A guy you want in your corner when the going get’s tough.
While going through my recent troubles I didn’t share anything with him as I knew he was out of the country and didn’t want to “burden” him with my new challenges.
In hindsight, I wish I’d shared more.
He’s the type of guy who could have given me the “Right Words and Wisdom” when I needed them.
Here are some direct words he wrote to me in a recent email: (I was complaining about Karma etc…)
—————————
Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.
On the karma thing–the hell with it–let’s work it in our favor–we’ll do some great stuff together and get all the past shit out of the way.
—————————
Here is the point I wanted to get to…
…At some point, usually more often than we’d like, everyone of us striving to achieve our goals and live a bigger and bolder life will get our ASS KICKED!!!
We will go from being the prom king to outcast.
And this may happen over and over again.
We don’t hear much about these fallen from grace or hard knock stories because, simply put, they don’t sell.
We see the nice suits, fancy cars, and stacks of cash.
Hardly ever do we see the swamps full of alligators they had to climb through to get there.
This is partly why, I believe, most business owners fail.
We think it’s easier then it really is.
We underestimate what it might take and bring less “heart” then is needed to win the fight.
This is the type of heart it takes to win in this game we call life.
To achieve and overcome You’ve Got To GET UP!!
Just like one of hero’s and now deceased fighter Diego Corralles did in probably the greatest round of boxing EVER!!!
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST WATCH THIS CLIP BEFORE READING ON…
What do you see when you watch this clip?
A fighter who looks beaten.
Can barely see out of his eye.
Face a bloody mess.
Yet he’s in their slugging and moving forward.
He get’s knocked on his ass twice…yet finds the heart and fortitude to move forward.
There’s also a moment in their where his trainer, Joe Goosen, looks him in the eye while he’s putting his mouthpiece back in and say’s;
“You Better Fucking Get Inside On Him”
Think about that.
He doesn’t focus his fighter on the reality that he’s getting his ass kicked…
…he focuses him on the direction he needs to go in.
So to you Spike and my other friends i say…
“Thank You!!!” for telling me to “Get Inside” and keep moving forward.
One of my oldest and closest friends reminded me recently.
“Dexter”….”Resilience and Persistence are the single biggest traits of those whom succeed”
Can you weather the storms?
Can you adjust, move around, and overcome?
These are the real questions.
You see I was asking the wrong questions.
So today I’m back at it just like Diego in that infamous 10th round…
Plodding forward looking for my knockout punch.
As a young punk kid and multi National Golden Gloves Champion I prided myself in having an iron jaw.
In life and business you’ve got to have more than that.
Why?
Because your going to get tested more then you think.
I believe many of you follow this “Train Wreck” (me lol) around because I’m real.
I share the successes and the failures.
I’d like to believe we have much in common.
That’s why I share during these times.
Because I hope in some way I’m helping you overcome your own demons, challenges, and problems.
This leads me to ONE MORE LESSON today.
During this time I was able to share some of my wisdom with many people and one of those gems was something I’d like to share with you as well.
It’s what I call “Celebrity Tunnel Vision Syndrome”.
A long time ago I learned that you can’t just take in someone’s philosophy without question or merit.
We live in a society that once someone has celebrity status in our eyes they become our end all for everything in life.
Take Doctor Phil.
The guy’s probably an average psychologist at best.
But guess what…he’s even got a weight loss book out their with him on cover belly over belt and all.
When’s the last time you saw one of your favorite products endorsed by some reality television show smuck that can’t even spell the name of the product they are endorsing yet…
…out the door the average American runs to buy it cuz “Snooki” uses it!
In our world I’m going to share with you two examples of Dogma that is taught that may be hurting you.
Yet…if you just looked one level under the surface you’d see that it’s all bullshit.
I need to pre-frame these examples with something that in hindsight may seem a bit funny to you.
I’m a huge Dan Kennedy fan.
I believe in about 80% of what he preaches.
Yet for the purposes of today these examples just happen to have his name in them.
Example Number One:
Dan Kennedy preaches as loud as he can that he HATES employees.
He spouts on about the evil nature of people in general etc…
He talks about thieving etc…
Yet as he’s up on stage ranting on and his disciples are locked in his mass of employees are running around doing the “behind the scenes” work and running the office back in Baltimore.
Yes…he probably claims their not “His” employees.
But I’ll challenge you to this.
Go back and compare business, systems, structure, etc… Pre Bill Glazer to Today.
Completely different business with an entirely different bottom line.
Without the employees I’d venture to guess there is no Private Jet or Private Venture Capital Investment of Millions of dollars.
So before you go around ranting about the evils of employees and how you never want anyone more then yourself and your little office in the corner of your house actually “THINK” about what your “Thinking”…
…AWE…that’s a novelty idea.
Sometimes things aren’t as they seem.
Sometimes the Guru is just spouting a bunch of crap that continues to sell.
I’m probably not making a bunch of friends out their but I’m sharing some real shit that nobody talks about.
Example Number Two:
Dan also tells a story in his seminars and in his “Unofficial Biography” about breaking his arm when he was a kid.
He tells of how he ran into the house and went downstairs where his father worked.
As the story goes….NOBODY MESSED WITH DAD DURING WORK HOURS.
Mom and Son went downstairs and dared to do the unthinkable and mess with pops.
Dad tells mom to just wrap up the arm in Ice and when He is done they would take him to the hospital at the end of the day.
Lesson is supposed to be don’t let anyone mess with your time or commitments.
I say this story is so fucking narrowly focused and irresponsible that it’s probably caused more dysfunction then help.
I’d challenge Mr. Kenendy to question what He might of learned from this that may have messed up his own ability to have meaningful and nurturing relationships.
I’m not accusing.
Just an observations from afar.
Tied to this in the same book He tells the story of getting his Divorce and how many of his so called friends sided with his ex and ignored him.
Using that story to unconsciously paint a story of how Humans are just plain untrustworthy and selfish is what I gained.
The truth is I’d ask this question.
Had you taken some time from your “Busy” schedule or given an extra minute or two here and there to those whom deserved it, your friends…
….just maybe all those who seemed to desert you may not have.
So I say this.
Guard your time.
Be on time.
Honor your commitments.
But don’t become so damn gruff and callused that you end up sitting in a corner office by yourself with no connection, no love, no meaningful relationships.
Their are dual lessons we can pull from all of these stories.
Some things you just have to dig a bit deeper.
If someone is preaching to you about connection and relationship yet they’ve been divorced 7 times and haven’t had a true friend since kindergarten I’d suggest you might, just maybe, want to take your “Celebrity Vision” and focus it elsewhere.
So now it’s time to get up off the canvas, once again, and starting honoring those commitments.
Moving forward without the past holding me back.
To you, my friend, reader, or client.
Thanks…
You Rock!!!
May life meet us half way.
May we push aside the shit that gets in the way.
With much Love…
