Today I want to share with you the notes I took for Day 20 of the Eben Pagan Seeds of Success Course which was focused on the topic of mastering knowledge work.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that a person graduating college today will have 10-14 different jobs and 3-5 different career changes by age 38.

Multiple careers… and within those careers… multiple jobs.

You can easily see that this is the future for everyone who is going to work from here on out but you may not easily see how all your careers will have something in common and that is the fact that the majority of us will be “Knowledge Workers.”

For centuries working with our hands was the norm.   

This paradigm of the majority of the workforce earning their living with manual labor.

Somewhere around 75% of us use our minds/knowledge work rather than physical labor to earn our living.

This means that the demand for knowledge has expanded with more people having more time on their hands to consume it.

This means the demand for people to create knowledge products/live training has also expanded.

Becoming a master of knowledge and technology is fast becoming the new standard.

Creating new knowledge resources that lead people to desirable results will continue to be a source of wealth in the future.

Knowledge is what will allow us to maximize our physical and mental resources.

So instead of hoarding and fighting over oil… the goal becomes to create a new fuel that makes oil irrelevant.

The 5 Traits That Define Someone Who Is A Master of Knowledge

A simple definition of this is a person who not only can learn quickly but who is also willing to learn quickly and looks forward to learning more

…someone who can teach others quickly and effectively…

…someone whose knowledge allows them to make accurate decisions quickly . . .

…someone who can set up systems that give them proper feedback and allows for progress to happen efficiently…

…someone who can coordinate knowledge distribution in a way that other people can also benefit from their findings.

This is a reality worth developing ourselves for.

Here Are The 4 Abilities You’ll Need To Master To Succeed As A Knowledge Worker

#1: Specialized Deep Knowledge

You want to cultivate knowledge that lets you create value that people are willing to pay for.

An example of specialized deep knowledge that has been turned into millions and millions of dollars is everything that has been sold on the topic of “internet marketing.”

There is a massive demand out there for this knowledge because business owners are looking to reach customers online but most of them are clueless about how to do this and the market for this is only going to grow as the market grows.

#2: The Ability To Get What You Want With Communication

In the virtual world, it will be of utmost importance to have the ability to connect with and synchronize with the people who can help us reach our outcomes through many varied channels.

You need to master verbal communication, body language, the written word, and the skill of communicating with images.

And one of the key skills to develop is that of Specificity.

Most people communicate in a vague, abstract and blurred manner. Especially when it comes to the written word.

The goal to strive for is to be able to tell people exactly what you want.

“Design a banner ad” is vague and non-specific.

“Design a banner ad to use for’s most expensive and visible placement” is specific.

A great way to make sure that you can’t be misunderstood is to explain the point you’re trying to make three different ways

Never assume one way of explaining something is sufficient.

Most instructions are not clear.

When you explain something one way, the probability of being understood is somewhere around 20-30%.

If you say it two or more ways, the probability of being understood goes way up.

How can you say something three ways without it sounding weird?

You can describe it literally

Then you can describe metaphorically

And then you can tell a story about it.

So firstly… if you were trying to describe to someone that you wanted an advertisement run for the newspaper you could tell them that you wanted it to look like an editorial so that the reader could trust it at first glance.

You could give them the exact specifications for what size it should be, what font it should be, what size type it should be, and exactly what it should say.

Next, you could give a metaphor by saying…

“Have you ever been talking to someone and you felt like the only reason they were talking to you was that they had an agenda, you know like the salesperson who is only being nice to you because they want something from you?

“Think about how different that is with someone you trust who you know only has your best interest in mind. They interact with you in an entirely different way.

“That’s how I want this advertisement to communicate with our perfect prospects via looking like an article in the paper because people buy the newspaper for the articles; not for the used car advertisements that people don’t trust.”

Then, you could tell a story about how you buying something from an ad like this one time even though you knew it was an ad and that your defenses are usually ultra high against advertisements but that this ad was so well-written and was offering something that you truly wanted so you allowed yourself to go with the flow and get genuinely excited to buy from it.

Do you see how each of those variations didn’t take very long to convey?

Do you notice how each of them normally occur in everyday conversations and how by only doing one of them, you’re leaving room for being misunderstood?


And you may very well do one or two of these already and now you know to consciously focus on doing all three to make sure that you’re understood.

#3: The Ability To Sell and Market

You need to be able to influence people to make decisions that are good for them if you want to be a master of knowledge work.

People who have been in positions where they have to sell one-on-one get some of the most valuable experience a knowledge worker could ever have.

Professional sales; the opposite of un-professional sales that you experience all the time; is the art of helping people by matching up what you sell… to what they need and want.

Asking people what their biggest fear, frustration, and the problem they’d like to overcome is something that top sales professionals do.

And they don’t just do this with prospects.

They do it with anyone they care about in their life that they want to try to help.

This is one of the most useful and valuable sets of questions available to you.

It will deliver tremendous insights to you.

The answers you’ll be getting from people will be the language they use inside their minds when talking to themselves.

When you take these words and phrases and use them in your marketing and selling, your message will be 1,000 times more influential than if you just use vague and generic statements.

#4: The Ability To Teach

If you don’t like thinking of yourself as a “teacher” you can substitute the word, “coach, advisor, or mentor” for it.

You want to first master the ability to teach one-on-one and then work towards being able to command a small group and from there, if you wish, work at teaching a vast audience.

Getting the book, “Co-Active Coaching” is something Eben highly recommends you do to help get yourself comfortable with the starting step of working with someone one-on-one.

This process allows you to get direct, real-world feedback on what you’re doing.


As you evolve through each of these phases, you will come closer and closer to mastering knowledge work.

These are the skills you can use to not only help yourself but to also help other people in the world.

And if you don’t master them, you’re putting yourself at a serious disadvantage.
