Watch and see how this glitch in your thinking can completely ruin all of your small business marketing strategies and what to do about it . . .

I recently was reminded of how our “Map of the World” – our inner game – can get us in trouble in business.

small business marketing strategies - inner game

Thankfully my reminder came in the course of casual conversation during a road trip.

I was driving through the mountains in Northern Arizona (yep they have em here) when my partner and I saw some wildlife.

Somehow that got us to talking about the different animals we’d seen in the wild and our different experiences.

During this time we ran across a Coyote.

Now my partner had just read a book about a women’s experience raising a Wild Coyote as her own.

He shared with me how much he enjoyed it and topped it off with this statement.

“I can’t believe people would actually shoot these poor animals”…” “I mean after all they are passive and run at the sight or sound of anything and they rarely harm anything”

His reference was this was his Father’s experience as a child raising cattle in Texas.

His Father had told him he’d never seen a Coyote harm anything.

In case you are unaware I was raised in a small town in Idaho.

Many of my friend had ranches or farm where I worked during the summer and played.

Because of this I immediately lashed out and said his Father was “Nuts”.

“I’ve seen Coyotes Kill countless little calf’s and actually take down and kill very big cows”

I rambled on about my many experiences of this and then told of the stories of my friends Fathers and I on the “hunt” to kill the coyotes.

After releasing my emotionally charged view of “I’m Right” damnit, I went to Google to prove my point.

Guess what.

One of the very first articles told the story of  a gentleman who’d lived in Missouri and Texas.

His earlier life of being in Missouri was consistent with mine. Coyotes were evil rascals that would kill other animals and disturb your community.

However, his experience in Texas was much like my partners Father.

Was I right? YES!

Was my partners and his Father right? YES!

Is that possible yes.

What’s the lesson here.

Remember that we are blinded by our “Maps of the World”

Our customers may not see things as we do.

They may not learn the same way.

They may not do many things the same way.

Therefore it’s important to never take something for granted or “Fact” without first getting to know our customers.

You can do this through emails, polls, one-on-one consultations, etc. (Here’s what Eben Pagan believes to be process to go about doing this . . . )

Not matter what you thought never think anything is FACT without first looking beyond your Map.

I’m assuming you’ve had similar experiences as I’ve had.
